In the original game in the beginning, melee was the main form of combat. This was due to the fact that ranged and magic were not developed. Ranged was completely undeveloped. There was a very limited amount of range armor, and ranged was rarely used in a PvP context. Magic had also its drawbacks. The user was required to wait 20 seconds following casting a spell which failed.
It was difficult to master magic as well as the Runecrafting ability made it impossible to afford runes. Even though magic gained more credence with the advent of the God spells (which were more popular than magic) Magic was primarily a complementing tool for melee. Runescape Classic Attack, Strength and Magic were more well-liked in combat calculation than Ranged or Magic.
Runescape Classic's maximum combat level was 123. The calculation of combat did not change much after Runescape 2 was changed. The maximum combat level was increased to 126 since prayer was considered more. The calculation did not favor magic or ranged less or more. However in the actual combat system they were.
They were each given their own class that included magic and ranged. After the release of the updates from the beginning of 2004 until the beginning of spring 2005, both magic and ranged were given high tier armours, new options for attacking (i.e. the Ancient Magicks Spell Book) as well as a shield against melee prayer, more access to arrows and runes and many more. The classes of these were much more effective than the melee and could be considered to be equal.
